Conductor: Kathleen Allan (Canada)
Canadian conductor, composer and soprano Kathleen Allan is rapidly becoming internationally respected for her sharp musicianship, compelling performances and engaging compositions.
Her work has been commissioned and performed by ensembles throughout North America, the UK, and in Argentina, where her work was featured at the World Symposium on Choral Music. As a conductor, she has held positions with St. Michael’s Choir School, the Yale Glee Club, the Vancouver Bach Choir, and was the 2013 Conducting Fellow of the Canadian Chamber Choir.
Also in high demand as a soprano soloist and professional choral singer, she has appeared as a soloist with National Broadcast Orchestra of Canada and Berkshire Choral Festival Choir, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the Vancouver Bach Choir. In addition to freelancing regularly in Canada and the United States, she has sung as a member of the Atlanta-based Skylark Vocal Ensemble, the Vancouver Chamber Choir, and the Yale Schola Cantorum. A passionate interpreter of new music, she has premiered over two dozen works for the voice, and her 2011 solo recital of original vocal music received national media attention on CBC.
She holds a degree in composition from the University of British Columbia and a Master of Choral Conducting from Yale University where she studied with Marguerite Brooks, Jeffrey Douma, David Hill, Simon Carrington, and Masaaki Suzuki.
Upcoming engagements include performances with the Arnold Schoenberg Choir at the Salzburg Festival, original orchestrations for the Charlottetown Festival, and premieres by the Prince George Symphony Orchestra, Yale Glee Club, and Opera on the Avalon.
Soprano: Estelí Gomez (USA)
Originally from Santa Cruz, California, Estelí received her Bachelor of Arts with honors in music from Yale College, and Master of Music from McGill University, studying with Sanford Sylvan.
Praised for her “clear, bright voice” (New York Times) and “artistry that belies her young years” (Kansas City Metropolis), soprano Estelí Gomez is quickly gaining recognition as a stylish interpreter of early and contemporary repertoires. In January 2014 she was awarded a Grammy with contemporary octet Roomful of Teeth, for best chamber music/small ensemble performance; in November 2011 she received first prize in the Canticum Gaudium International Early Music Vocal Competition in Poznan, Poland.
Highlights of 2015 include her performance of Mozart’s Exultate Jubilate with the Louisiana Philharmonic in New Orleans and her performances in Seoul, South Korea and Istanbul, Turkey with Roomful of Teeth.
Mezzo: Mindy Ella Chu (USA)
Chinese-American mezzo-soprano, Mindy Ella Chu performs different styles ranging from early music and opera to contemporary music.
She holds a Bachelor of Music degree with distinction from San Diego State University and graduated with a Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music and Institute of Sacred Music.
As a concert soloist she has sang Missa and Cantatas with Masaaki Suzuki and Splendente with David Hill.
She has performed with professional music groups such as the Yale Schola Cantorum, Julliard 415, New Haven Symphony, San Diego Symphony and San Diego Opera.
Recent performance highlights include singing “Isrealiteish Man” in Handel’s Judas Maccabeus and “Drabella” in Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte.
She also organized a performance of Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia to create awareness for female violence.
Countertenor: Hiroya Aoki (Japan,Tokyo only)
Born in Tokyo, Hiroya Aoki studied violin and sang as a boy soprano in the Tokyo Boys and Girls Choir. He studied Classical Music at Tokyo University of Arts and Religious Music at Elizabeth Music College. He had made regular trips to Europe for extra study while in student. He has performed solo part of Passions and many Cantatas by J.S. Bach. As a major member of Bach Collegium Japan, he has participated in many performances and recordings both in Japan and abroad. His solo album, “British Lute Songs”, published in 2014, has been named a Special Selection by the Record Geijutsu magazine.
Tenor: Dann Coakwell (USA)
Dann Coakwell, tenor, has performed as a soloist internationally and nationally under such conductors as Helmuth Rilling, Masaaki Suzuki, William Christie, Nicholas McGegan, Matthew Halls, John Scott, and Craig Hella Johnson. Coakwell can be heard as a soloist on the Grammy-winning Conspirare: The Sacred Spirit of Russia, 2014 (Harmonia Mundi) and Grammy-nominated Conspirare: A Company of Voices, 2009. He has performed multiple times in New York’s Carnegie Hall, and he made his Lincoln Center New York solo debuts at both Alice Tully Hall and Avery Fisher Hall to critical acclaim in 2014. He has appeared as a soloist with organizations such as Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart in Germany, Bach Collegium Japan, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra in San Francisco, Oregon Bach Festival, and Conspirare.

Baritone: Toru Kaku (Japan)
Born in Fukuoka, Japan, Kaku graduated with a Bachelor and Masters degree in Vocal Music from Tokyo University of the Arts. He graduated at the top of his class and received Acanthus honors. He also finished Nikikai Opera School at the top of his class and received the MVP and Shizuko Kawasaki awards. He placed 2nd in the 20th Yu-ai German Lied contest. He was also selected as a semi-finalist at the 15th NEUE STIMEN 2013 International contest, the first time ever for a Japanese contestant. In 2014, he became a CHANEL Pygmalion Days Artist. He released his debut album “Kaku Toru Debut” in 2012, and in June 2015 he will release his second album. He will play the part of Achilla in the Nikikai production of “Giulio Cesare” in May 2015; and in November, he will play the title role of “Don Giovanni” at Nissei Theater.
He is a member of the Bach Collegium Japan and Nikikai. Part-time assistant at Ferris University. Contract musician at Toho Gakuen College.
